LANSING EASTERN ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
2011 INDUCTEES

LARRY BATES, Class of 1955

  • Outstanding wrestling career at Eastern.
  • In his three years on the Varsity Team he lost only one match and he later easily defeated that opponent in a rematch.
  • Larry was the first three-time State Individual Champion, winning State Titles in 1953, 1954, 1955
  • Following graduation Larry worked for GM and later its subsidiary EDS where he became a Supervisor.  He retired after a 38-year tenure.
  • Larry started the Middle School Wrestling program in DeWitt and his teams were undefeated during his 3-year wrestling coaching career
  • Larry moved on to Assistant Coach at DeWitt High School when his sons went there.  Several of the wrestlers Larry had coached in Middle School went on to win State Championships, including his two sons who each won two individual State Championships.

  • 1st Team All Conference as a Sophomore – 1996
  • Led Eastern to its 1st District Title in 10 years as a Junior
  • Member of National Honor Society
  • Played College Basketball at University of Detroit Mercy
  • Finished in Top 10 in University of Detroit Mercy History in Scoring, Rebounds, and Free Throws
  • 1 of 5 Players in University of Detroit Mercy’s History to score 1300+ points and 750+ rebounds
  • Kansas Wild Cat Classic All Tournament Team and set 3 tournament records
  • Florida A & M Invitational Tournament MVP
  • Professional 2002-2003 National Women’s BB League-Grand Rapids Blizzard
  • 2003-2004 Buenos Aires, Argentina – lead the Argentinean League with 21.5pts/gm, 10 rbs/gm
  • 2004-2005  NVBL Chicago Blaze
  • 2005-2006 – Germany 22+pts/gm, 8+rebs/gm
  • In 2009 was playing professionally in Spain
